Where is your motivation? If we can all just be honest for a moment… real estate is hard work. While it can be very lucrative it also can be a total pain. As you grow in your career and start doing your own marketing you will see what I mean. Dealing with angry sellers, desperate sellers, buyers, and title companies can get overwhelming or annoying.

In these moments, it’s crucial to remember the “why” behind what you’re doing.  The driving factors in your life that told you it’s not okay to settle for average. The reason you’re stuffing 500 envelopes hoping for a couple calls. The motivation behind why you read my blog 😉 I’m going to share mine. I also want to hear yours!

We all are (in some form or another) a product of our environment. It’s not nature vs nurture–it’s both that influence who we become and what we do. Growing up in my house, we had secondhand clothes, a long list of chores, and parents who worked like crazy to provide for us. My dad often worked 12+ hour days, 7 days a week to make ends meet and get jobs done on time. I still admire that about him, but we all wanted to be able to see more of him.

While this is probably why have a strong work ethic, it’s also something I want to change. My wife shouldn’t have to ask me to stop working at 10:30pm so we can spend time together. As much as I would love to succeed and have a Ferrari Enzo parked next to a Mercedes G63 Amg, I value relationships over material possessions. I want to find ways to make a living without missing out on life.

My why’s:

  • I want to be able to travel and spend time with my extended family.
  • I want to be able to volunteer with my church and make the world a better place.
  • I want to be there when my kids go to school and be there when they get home (when we have kids).
  • I want my kids to be able to go to any college they choose and have it paid for.
  • I want to be able to take friends/family on trips.
  • I want to really learn from the wisdom of my grandparents while I can.
  • I want to take my wife to Paris out of the blue for fun.

What motivates you–big or small? If you read my blog, if I have taught you anything, now is where I want your interaction. Feel free to leave your whole list or just one or two in the comments!

After you have ironed all of this out, set actionable goals for each one to get you there.
